From the Root is a zine dedicated to documenting stories, poetry, articles, testimonies and images of women of colour in Canada. Sometimes political, other times posh but always powerful, From the Root showcases voices from women navigating through this land called Canada in the skin they are in. This quarterly zine is distributed nation-wide with editors based in Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver.
First published independently March of 2014, From the Root zine seeks to counteract the lack of publications from authors and visual artists of colour in literary magazines and gallery spaces. Although taking the form of a zine, From the Root attempts to stand out beyond the cut and paste tradition of DIY zines and bridge the gap between a punk zine and a prestigious literary journal.
It is with a sense of urgency that From the Root manifests as a nation-wide project. This publication is a only the beginning a national dialogue between women of colour in book form. There are only a handful of literary journals in Canada focused on showcasing people of colour exclusively. There are too many unheard, unspoken, unkempt, unattainable stories that are deserving of our attention.
